Strengthening Democracy in Local Bodies: Awareness Program in Chengalpattu district​

RACLD conducted work shop ‘Local governance is the soul of Democracy’ at Chithamur, Chengalpattu District, for the elected Panchayat representatives and Self-Help Group (SHG) women leaders who have actively involved in democratic and governance-related activities. The programme witnessed the participation of 15 Panchayat Presidents and 50 SHG women leaders.

The programme was presided over by Dr. Deepamala, Chairperson, Research and Action Centre for Local Democracy. The Chief Guest Prof. G.Palanidurai, retired professor of Gandhigram rural University was facilitating the workshop and Mr. C.Mahindran, Social Activist, also participated in the programme.

The dignitaries engaged in detailed interactions with the elected representatives on local governance mechanisms and deliberated on the challenges faced by Panchayat-level functionaries, particularly Panchayat Presidents. The participants were guided on effectively managing Panchayat-level administrative responsibilities and were encouraged to coordinate with district-level administrative authorities for the timely resolution of issues.

Product stalls displaying items produced by SHG women were set up at the venue, highlighting women-led livelihood initiatives and reinforcing the role of SHGs in community development and local economic empowerment.
